Our Top Picks
The short answer: unlock Sauda first if you mostly play tight, loop-heavy maps, pick Etienne if camo leaks keep ending your runs, and build Ninja Monkey + Alchemist as your damage core in almost every case, with Monkey Village as the first support tower worth its cash. Those picks give the best mix of map flexibility, upgrade cost, role coverage and value once you move from Medium into Hard, Impoppable and CHIMPS. Everything below explains where each pick wins, where it falls off, and what to choose when your situation is different.
Quick comparison: the picks worth building around
Costs below are in-game cash on Medium difficulty, rounded to the nearest $50, based on the in-game difficulty table and Ninja Kiwi’s official patch notes. Balance updates move these by small amounts, so treat them as bands rather than fixed quotes.

Hero tier list: who to unlock and when
Heroes are judged differently from towers because you only get one per game, and they level from 1 to 20 as your towers pop bloons. A hero whose real power spike lands at level 20 is worth much less on a short map than one that carries the first forty rounds alone.
S tier: Sauda, Geraldo, Corvus
- Sauda is the best value hero for most players. She is cheap for a hero, attacks fast in melee, and hits several bloons per swing, which means she covers a whole stretch of track on maps with loops or tight corners. The trade-off is map dependence: on long, open layouts she simply cannot reach enough of the path, and she has no answer to camo on her own.
- Geraldo has the highest ceiling in the game because his shop lets you buy a specific answer to whatever is killing you — extra damage, extra range, extra income — rather than hoping one hero kit fits. He suits players who enjoy active management. The trade-off is real: he is micro-heavy and his raw personal damage is unremarkable.
- Corvus is a spell-based carry with enormous output if you keep his abilities cycling. On almost any map he can be the best hero in the lobby. The trade-off is attention: play him passively and he underperforms a $900 hero.
A tier: Etienne, Psi, Benjamin, Obyn Greenfoot
- Etienne is the pick that fixes the most common beginner failure, because at higher levels he gives camo detection to every monkey on the map instead of forcing you to buy detection repeatedly. His damage is average, which is the whole trade.
- Psi damages bloons across the screen at higher levels, which is excellent crowd control on long maps. Early on, Psi struggles against single tough targets.
- Benjamin generates cash and utility, making him strong on standard difficulties and in co-op where games run long. His value drops in CHIMPS-style play where raw damage and coverage decide runs.
- Obyn Greenfoot is a niche but powerful pick if you are building around Druids and magic monkeys, since his buffs line up with that strategy.
B tier and situational: Quincy, Gwendolin, Admiral Brickell, Pat Fusty, Captain Churchill, Ezili, Adora, Striker Jones
- Quincy is the free starter and a genuinely fine one: cheap, reliable, and strong through the early rounds. He just does not scale into the late game the way Sauda or Corvus do.
- Captain Churchill and Adora are expensive carries with weak openings. They are only worth it if your early game is already handled.
- Admiral Brickell is the water-map specialist; Pat Fusty rewards clumping damage towers around him; Striker Jones wants a Mortar-and-Bomb lineup;
